Rhythmic Gymnastics introduction




Rhythmic Gymnastics is a sport for one or five persons which is mostly practised by women's of a young age. Gymnasts manipulate one or two pieces of apparatus such as the clubs, the hoop, the ball, the ribbon,the rope or freehand, which means no apparatus.

  • The ball must be made of rubber or soft plastic with a diameter of 18-20 centimeters. It must weight at least 400 grams.
  • The hoop can be made of wood or plastic. Nowadays gymnasts normally use the plastic ones. It has an inner diameter of 80 o 90 centimeters. It has to weight at least 300 grams.
  • The rope is made from hemp or different material. It's lenght depends on the height of the gymnast. Performances must have at least three leaps, as well as performances with the hoop.
  • Gymnasts use two clubs of equal lenght, 40-50 centimeters. They are made of wood, plastic or rubber.
  • The ribbon is a 7 meter strip of ribbon made from sattin or similar materials . The stick is about 50-60 centimeters. The ribbon must be in constant movement throught the routine. 


Rhythmic Gymnastics evolved from a host of related disciplines. It incorporates elements from classical ballet, such as pliés and arabesques, as well as the German system of emphasising apparatus work for muscles development and the swedish method of using free exercise to develop rythm.
